Microsoft Lync is spreading in corporate market like wildfire.
Not only that, but MS is riding the wave of Lync-to-Lync federation.
It is interesting to note the emergence of tools to e.g. set check the federation capability of an Outlook contact.
But let's remember, that while reducing costs is always a target, I would argue Lync-to-Lync federation is not a prime decision making criteria in choosing a supplier, quite yet.
Business responsible managers together with sourcing will choose the suppliers, not IT departments.
Having said that, features beyond basic voice like document sharing may be more important.

Come come... Microsoft pushed ICS federation for ages and even Cisco has been futzing around with it between Call Manager and Telepresence.
The reality is that we're quickly reaching Mobile über Alles in the Enterprise... rather than worrying about short codes and email dialing, we're looking at self-learning social infrastructures (like Facebook and LinkedIn) with abstracted addressing infrastructures. Who cares how you're connecting the call when you don't even care how it's addressed?
Glad to be able to see your thoughts again, Janne! Good luck in your new adventure.
Hey thanks, EndHaiku!
What remains unanswered is how the facebooks etc will truly integrate CoIP.
Even FB chat is kinda obtrusive, people do social networking to be more efficient and realtime kinda is not in line with that.
Peculiar artісle, juѕt what ӏ wаs loоking foг.
